A Different Kind of
The Night Before Christmas

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
A lone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

With all that has happened since 9/11, it is overwhelming to think of how our world has changed. It will never be the same, unfortunately. At 59 years I remember not locking doors at night, going everywhere with friends without fear, every adult was your friend, other countries were far away and only discussed in history or geography books.
Now we find they aren't far enough. They come here to destroy and hurt our people that go broke sending them aid. They waste lives like water and have no feelings about being decent neighbors. Sorry you can't kill all the terrorists at once. Perhaps a well placed bomb in the next street rally would get their attention.
We at home really care-and those that oppose hear from me instantly. Only our ignorance of not teaching the reality of war keeps our generations ignorant. No one remembers nor teaches how many men died in WWI or WWII, nor on the beaches of France, or Battle of the Bulge. No parent, sibling, or friend wants to lose someone special, but having conquered the 3rd or 4th largest army in the world in a few weeks and losing only 3000 soldiers total since, our forces are incomprehensible with their power. Kick their asses for this Texan and be safe. They have no rules so remember to take that attitude when faced with your situations you face.
We will welcome you home proudly!
Frank K. in Texas

May all families be guided by angels light

Each family at Fort Lewis is in my prayers .....

Our list at the base is long so withe family from Beach wood, Clark moor, Madigan centers al take care the angels whose families are in Iraq and abroad..Knowing they have exceptional care and loved ones are supported, by the all the lights in hearts...

Memories from a teachers heart

Promised Ocean Shores 'Tis my heart ours
A bit gathered with foam from tips of fleeting geese
Small forlorn smiles, creatures scurry to and fro
Scorched prelims sands timeless, with each solider's heart
Salt draws near seas change the gowns of white
Shadows cause nights over dawned seas
Daintily painted with all loves family
Bindweed lights afar for tiny faces in lost lovers are free to me
Prophetic winds clash in roaring waves
Above rooftops we shall see the nights etched
Winding roads with mystics bear
Shall forever be there,

A Christmas Bow for My Soldier

Our yellow ribbon has faded, so we tied a new one tight
A bold symbol to represent your spirit glowing with Christmas light,
It's color reminds us of all you are going through
And your heart of love that beats for what is true.

More than ever at Christmas, we do want you...to come home to stay,
But as God has another plan, we'll try hard to be brave on this special day.
Oh how so dearly we wish..you were with us here,
Home in our hearts, forever near.

How much we want to hold you...close and never let you go,
To keep you from harm, no more suffering to know.
We are praying angel comfort for you in all your pain,
So you will feel the peace of Christmas instead of chilling rain.

For, you have such courage..brave loyalty in your heart,
A call to be a blessing where you are, that keeps us apart.
So, while we'll miss you so..our hearts also beat with pride,
As we celebrate yuletide this year, without you by our side.

But, in spirit you are here..just as if you never went away,
For the Christmas love we share, means you will be with us on our day.
Close forever, never to part..held together for the same arms,
Up-hold us, as the ones that keep your soul from harm.

Each day we wake and pray God your heart to keep,
And may you dream many sweet memories as you sleep,
While you lay beneath the shining stars above,
Surrounded by eternal love.

God brought you into His world so long ago,
For you to set others free from the tyrrany of the foe,
You go forth every day, with your life to give.
That precious little ones may come to know truth and be free to live,.

We send you our blessing, we send you our Christmas love
If somehow our wishes can bring you light from above,
To surround your heart with that first Christmas joy and peace,
So that litttle boy delight will never cease.

The color of your life will never fade, your rich beauty is tied in place
and your light will glow forever...for in our heart, we see your face.

Time
.........for anthonys daddy

Could you but hold the hands of time
to whisper a precious moment with love

The murmuring solitude of a a solider's heart

Could you but hold a prayer for all

To just travel in the souls realm
Of memories or touch a rose of beauty,

I can see the heavens as they part

I am but the rain, children playing
Hear me as, Sending angels to all families hearts

All things grow with gods light~~~~

A illuminated peace of crystal stands in the sky
With mystic force it shall pass by again
Crystalline presence is there to reveal
In legendary elegance each silvery strand

All things grow with gods light~~~~

Daily care from the gentle soul
Lanterns filled with petals of soft love
Will invoke the spirit to see
The beauty in angels cloaks being

All things grow with gods light~~~~

A world of solace dreams are collected in wills
Unicorns with dance in somber net
Beauty is returned to youth gifts
To hold hands again with our lord at his ebb
